An ancient cathedral city in North Yorkshire, York is home to some of the best preserved historical buildings in Europe.
There’s history at every turn, but the city’s charm is typified in its most famous old street – The Shambles – where 14th century timber-framed buildings overhang the cobbles and promise one of the most romantic strolls in Britain. With quaint coffee shops and boutiques to browse, this is certainly a city for taking it easy – but there’s a livelier side to York too. It’s known as the City of Festivals, hosting cultural celebrations all year round.
